#thebigidea Project Now Accepting ApplicationsAugust 13, 2015 1:06 PM
RALEIGH - August 3rd, 2015- Big Pixel, LLC. today announced that they are accepting applications for The Big Idea Project. This program offers product design, software-development, and investment help combined with mentorship for one lucky tech startup in the Triangle.
Big Pixel, founded in 2013 by David Baxter, has partnered with many startups over the years to help them win awards, get connected with the rest of the community, and, most importantly, go live with their ideas. This project, using #thebigidea on social media, is an even more comprehensive way to work towards getting a startup off the ground.
Steen Kanter, of Kanter International, had plenty of experience working with major brands, and is credited with helping to launch IKEA in the United States. However, the company was looking to become more involved with the startup community. Through #thebigidea project, Kanter International will support the winning startup with business and band strategy sessions.
Uncompany supports freelancers around the Triangle with workshops and networking opportunities. Maari Casey, the founder, will use her ten plus years of experience with marketing and strategy to build excitement for the launch of the startup.
#thebigidea project also partners with HQ Raleigh, Wyrick Robbins, Malartu Funds, and the NC State Entrepreneurship Clinic. HQ Raleigh will be providing workspace, as well as access to a strong community of more than 200 companies. Wyrick Robbins offers legal advice, both through weekly office hour opportunities and WyrickNow, the company’s 24-hour email platform. The Entrepreneurship Clinic will have a group of students partner with the selected startup to assist with tasks, while Malartu Funds will help the startup launch a funding project after the demo day to secure funding for their next steps.
Triangle-based startups are invited to apply to #thebigidea project. The application includes a 1-4 minute video that must showcase the entire team, not a typical demo or pitch. Only one startup will be selected, and the video component is meant to help each startup set itself apart from the rest.
“We want the startup to come out of our program ready to hit the marketplace like a gunshot,” said Baxter. “Our goal with this project is to be practical, to get in the trenches with them and help build the vision of a company. Hopefully, we can do this every year and have a little portfolio, and over time, one of these will hit.”

- One startup will be chosen on October 13th as the winner of the project.
- The winning startup will receive six months of free business and branding strategies; UX, Design, and Development; workspace; marketing; and other support, worth over $100k.
- Big Pixel’s goal with the #thebigidea project is to provide everything a big idea needs to succeed.
“We really believe and support the entrepreneurial mindset that is prevalent in this area. A lot of freelancers are a company of one, yes, but they have the drive to design their life and grow a business in the same way many larger size start-ups have. I believe this opportunity will allow us to work alongside very like-minded, driven thinkers and allow us to be challenged and pushed, as well as connect us to a larger network. I think as start-ups, freelancers, consultants, small business owners, whatever, continue to support each other in a desire to blaze a trail we will continue to see growth in independent businesses.”
- Maari Casey, Founder of Uncompany
“The Big Idea Project is an awesome path for that one lucky concept to transform from an idea to reality. I often see ideas that can’t get to the market due to lack of one or two needed components. The Big Idea Project addresses these needs and will lead to success. The NC State Entrepreneurship Clinic is proud to be an important component of the Big Idea Project. The expected outcome aligns with our tenets and will aid in educating our students."
- Lewis Sheats, Director of NC State Entrepreneurship Clinic
“Kanter International wants involvement with smart, aspiring entrepreneurs and The Big Idea Project offers such an opportunity. I want to work with them to ensure the chance of success.”
Steen Kanter, Chief Business Strategist of Kanter International
