HQ Green Games 2015 - Day 10: Invest GREEN

July 30, 2015 4:00 AM

We've reached the tenth and final day of this year's HQ Green Games! Thank you to all the participants for competing and becoming more mindful of sustainable activities. For the finale, we want to focus on some long-term investments that can easily be made to reduce your carbon footprint in a big way. Because little things accumulate, it may time to change habits and invest in new technology!

  • Best Buy - Get a programmable thermostat. It could cost you less than $50 and pay for itself in energy savings this year. Buzz this pin just for buying it. You can save 2.5% on your heating bill for each degree, and 5% on cooling for each degree over 24 hours.

  • Better Picker-Upper - Wiping up messes with old-growth forests? Use rags when you can, but if you have to use paper-towels, switch to post-consumer recycled brands. Buzz it when you go shopping. The NRDC says if every household in the US switched 1 roll, we could save 544,000 trees.

  • Cosmic Electronic - Protect the environment and get all the features you desire. When you buy a new DVD or Blu-Ray player, make sure it's Energy Star-qualified. The picture quality will be as crystal-clear as the energy savings over standard models. An energy model, using auto-shutoff, will onlybe idle 2.5 hrs/week and rust at just 15W.
